Dr Lizo Mbetshu
After graduating from the University of Transkei with an MBChB degree in 1992, Lizo worked at Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth and in general practice. He joined the ophthalmology unit at Livingstone Hospital on a part-time basis from 1995 – 1997, where he studied for his primary ophthalmology examinations.
In 1998 he became a full-time medical officer at Frere Hospital, East London. He then studied ophthalmology at the University of Cape Town and obtained his FCS from the College of Medicine in 2002 returning as a consultant in ophthalmology to the Frere / Cecilia Makiwane Hospital Complex. He started his own private practice in 2005. Because of his interest in vitreoretinal work, he went to Germany in 2007 and completed a mini-fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery and joined the European Retinal Society.
The East London Eye Hospital welcomed him as a member of the team in 2014. Lizo’s interests include cataract surgery, glaucoma, pediatric surgery, strabismus and retinal surgery.
