Andrew graduated from UCT with an MBChB degree in 1987. After a few years of further training in general and family medicine he returned to Cape Town to study ophthalmology and obtained his FCS from the College of Medicine in 1997. His career has included work in the public sector and a 2 year stint with the Fred Hollows Foundation. He has worked at the Eye Centre since 2000. His interests include cataract and refractive surgery, corneal diseases, paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus and vitreoretinal surgery. He is Past-President of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the South African Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the South African Vitreoretinal Society and the South African Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.

After graduating from the University of Transkei with an MBChB degree in 1992, Lizo worked at Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth and in general practice. He joined the ophthalmology unit at Livingstone Hospital on a part-time basis from 1995 – 1997, where he studied for his primary ophthalmology examinations.

In 1998 he became a full-time medical officer at Frere Hospital, East London. He then studied ophthalmology at the University of Cape Town and obtained his FCS from the College of Medicine in 2002 returning as a consultant in ophthalmology to the Frere / Cecilia Makiwane Hospital Complex. He started his own private practice in 2005. Because of his interest in vitreoretinal work, he went to Germany in 2007 and completed a mini-fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery and joined the European Retinal Society.

The East London Eye Hospital welcomed him as a member of the team in 2014. Lizo’s interests include cataract surgery, glaucoma, pediatric surgery, strabismus and retinal surgery.
