What is Refractive Surgery?
Refractive surgery changes the focusing mechanisms of the eye and treats common vision problems such as:
- Short-sightedness (myopia or near-sightedness)
- Far-sightedness (hyperopia or hypermetropia)
- Astigmatism
- Presbyopia (age-related loss of the ability to see near objects clearly)
This is most often achieved by reshaping the cornea with an excimer laser. Some conditions, however, require intraocular lenses to achieve this.
